Our First Sandbox

More than a month ago, I saved this draft in my iPhone during that sleep deprived night.

If not for their “Keeping Cool” May 2014 box, I will certainly miss posting this.  Anyway, for those who don’t know what exploresandbox is, it’s a monthly crafts box for kids.  They have different and appropriate themes every month with complete materials (which I really appreciate) and instructions on how to do it.  It’s not just arts and crafts, but it’s also loaded with science facts. 🙂 (check out their official website

The first box I ordered from them was their Christmas box last December 2013 and that’s what I almost forgot to post. hehe (If my previous post is late, I don’t know what to call this then, hehe)

The Christmas box contained 5 activities – DIY Christmas stockings, DIY Christmas ball, snow like mixture to build a snowman, a science project behind Santa and the chimney, and last was the good deed list.

For this box, we were only able to make 2 out of the 5,  for some reason the snowy substance won’t form and i feel it’s a little messy to play with. I also noted to myself to ask Leslie of exploresandbox how it should work, well obviously I forgot doing it. Haaay…

Here’s Liam with his Christmas projects.. 🙂

Here's our December box .. All excited to start! :)
Here’s our December box .. All excited to start! 🙂

First project that we did was the Christmas Ball.  Excited mommy that I am, I did not read the instruction and put the glitters outside the ball.. The daddy noticed and asked why am putting it outside when instruction said inside.. Sorry naman.. hahaha.. nevertheless, we enjoyed doing it together and this was one of our Christmas ornament in the tree. 🙂

The other project that we were able to make is the Christmas stockings!  Liam enjoyed putting on the buttons and for added work, I gave him some cotton balls to glue on top of the stocking.  Of course, mommy was the one who sew the socks together.

Now, our stocking is complete! TADA!

As for the other projects, I felt Liam was too young for them pa and we ran out of time na since we went home to Manila for the holidays. Nevertheless, we both enjoyed our project time.

Ask if I will order again?  Wait for my future posts for my answer. 😉

Holy week 2014

As part of our 2014 resolutions, Dino and I promised to travel with Liam more this year.  Last holy week,(yeah I know, suuuper late post again)  Our original plan was to go to CDO and let Liam experience the white water rafting then spend the rest of the holy week in Malai Balai (It’s soo nice there, promise! It’s like you’re in New Zealand).  But our good friend, suggested that we do it some other time as there are many tourist and travelers during holy week.  So instead of staying at home, I decided to book ourselves in a resort hotel nearby.

We booked ourselves in Best Western Sandbar Resort at Cordova Mactan Cebu (check out their official website).  It wasn’t that pricey and they are the only hotel that did not increase so much during peak season (1K additional only).  Swak na swak sa budget! 🙂

We also decided to go yaya-less this trip.  Asked Ate Donna to do a general cleaning instead.  Unfortunately, Dino was not feeling very well during the trip, so most of the photos you’ll see below are of me and Liam.

It wasn’t as grand as the Shangri-La Hotel, but it was cozy and we had a fun time together.  As they say, it’s not important how expensive or how grand the place is, as long as we are all together, that’s what matters!

Til our next Trip! :)

Handy Lolo

Liam has been fascinated with cars (read: real cars) as early as he was 6 mos old.  His curiosity started with the stirring wheel, then moved to the gear, then to the pedals. Now, he can distinguish automatic cars from manual cars by looking at the gear and pedals. Anyway, supporting his love for cars, his Lolo made cars (driver’s seat only) with wood, PVC pipes and old toys.

Introducing Liam’s ride V1 (drum roll please)

photo 1 (972 x 726)
V1 – using Liam’s kick board, pipes, stirring wheel from his Ninang and some straws

After a few weeks, Lolo got so hooked with the project and gifted his beloved apogi with a better version.  He gave it to Liam when we went home for Christmas.  My son was so ecstatic when he saw this.

V2
V2 (manual car) – bigger and better, complete with pedal (mind you, the pedal springs back when stepped on), gear, chair, stirring wheel and a logo.

Due to insistent public (read: apogi) demand, V2 was updated with a gas tank and foot rest before we went back to Cebu.  Since V2 is bulky, we can’t pack it to bring back to Cebu.  So, on Lolo’s next visit to Cebu which was only a week later after our holiday vacay in Kumati, he made Liam another one – this time it’s an automatic version.

Liam helping his Lolo fix the car - now with 4x4 gear.

A funny side story, while fixing V3, Lolo asked ate Donna to give him the screw driver. Donna passed the tool to Liam and asked him to give it to Lolo.  Who can guess what Liam did?  He gave Lolo his toy screw driver and used the real screw driver himself.  Kulit lang talaga.  Good thing, we have a spare driver, thus the photo above. 🙂

PS.  I just realized now, where my other chair had been. hahahaha.. 🙂

Christmas Balls Project

Am really not a crafty woman.  One of my least favorite is art class.  I remember my uncle telling my cousins to help me with my projects when I was still in elementary.  Naawa ata sya saken at hating gabi na di pa ko nangangalahati sa project ko.  When I was in high school naman, I always make it a point to team up with someone who’s good in drawing and in crafts. hehehe..

Liam is the opposite of me when it comes to art, he likes art.  He likes painting and all those crafty stuffs.  I think this is another de Leon side of him.  Dino is artistic in his own way.  He is good in drawing and not to mention he is good photographer.  May it be SLR or a simple point and shoot, he is really good.  We always say that he has an eye for it.  His Lolo and his Ninang is also very crafty.

Am also so lucky that Ninang Tita (my SIL, Leah of The Bright Spot) is very resourceful and never fails to update with anything and everything under the sun.  She posted this site on my FB page, telling me it’s a good Christmas project for Liam.  Tama nga sya, Liam did enjoy it.

This project is very easy, you only need Christmas balls, white acrylic paint, paint brush, markers and egg tray (for drying).

After the first ball, Liam went to the sink to wash his hands.  Eto mahirap sa batang to, he don’t want his hands dirty or sticky.  Wash agad yan.  hehehe.. So he washed his hands and told me he’ll do it by himself na.  After the Second time he washed  his hands, it’s my turn naman daw.

Kumati (Makati) Trip

Ever since the hubs handled Columbia Sportswear brand, he goes to the US for sales meeting twice a year.  One of which always falls on my birthday.  2010 was an exception (not the meeting date, but Dino did not attend since I just gave birth to Liam then.  This year, Dino was able to fix his schedule so he can fly back to Manila night of my special day.  At least for 2 hrs he will be able to celebrate it with me.  Unfortunately, his flight was delayed and he was home few hours after midnight.  Talk about irony.

Day before our trip, knowing that we’ll be out of town for my birthday, our Cebu staffs sent me a cake for my birthday.  To Liam delight.. 🙂 As usual, my little helped blow the candle and he helped himself with a slice. 🙂  Ever since we came here to Cebu, our staffs never failed to make our day more special. I feel loved. 🙂

Morning of our flight, we decided to bake Calamansi cupcakes and Carrot cupcakes as pasalubong.  I was so organized then, preparing one after the other.  That’s why when the oven decided to break down on me, both recipes were half baked. GRRR!!!  Anywya, Liam had fun doing it naman.  Will just bake some more for Christmas. 🙂

Liam, Donna and I flew to Manila 31st of October for my MIL’s birthday.  We were picked up by Lolo and Lola and dinner was waiting for us at home.  My SIL, Leah, and his hubby, AJ prepared their famous Yogurt Chicken, Pesto Pasta and their luscious Chocolate Cake for Lola.  To my son’s delight, he loved the Chocolate Ganache!

Every all saint’s day, I always help my mom out with the offering and all the rituals.  But since I moved to Cebu and had Liam, I wasn’t able to this anymore.  Even now that we are in Manila, I begged off since we don’t like bringing kids to such places.  I’ll wait for Liam to grow a little more older before introducing him to that.

So what do we do on a free day. Leah and I decided to go to Ace Water Spa in Pasig.  It was really nice and fun there.  Liam loved it so much that he is still asking me if we can go back there until now. the water is warm so it’s ok to stay there for hours without worrying that the little one is getting cold na.   There are so many babies there, even saw a new born in the kiddie pool with the yaya of course.  We had a great time but not much pics since they don’t allow picture taking from time you get into the shower area until you are done.  I appreciate this policy though.  🙂

On my birthday, we only stayed home to prepare for dinner.  Liam, on the other hand, played and make himself busy.  Since we are only staying for 4 nights, the in laws decided not to take all the toys out.  This made me realize one thing, it’s true when other mommies say that imagination and creativity comes out naturally with kids when they have only few toys.

Lolo brought out the toy gun Liam got last Christmas, after playing with the gun (as a gun), it then became a horse, which later became an iron.  hehe  Liam loves (understatement) playing cars – REAL cars.  He likes the steering wheel, the gear and now he met the pedals.  Anyway, we were not able to bring any of his driving toys, so made use of the drawer handles.  He said it’s his steering wheel and he has an imaginary kambyo (gear).  Oh, by the way, there are 3 drawers on Lolo’s bed, one drawer is Hi Ace, the other is Pajeyow and the last one is Starrex.  Funny little boy. 🙂

Before lunchtime, Ninang came down and do the stamp project with Liam, which later became their Tattoo.  At the end of the session, Liam looked like a battered child with all the purple ink on his arms and legs.  Ninang and I were not spared and have a lot of “tattoo’ on our arms as well.

That night, my in laws prepared some ‘handa’ for my birthday.  noodles, chicken and pork spring rolls.  My cousin dropped by to see Liam and of course celebrate my birthday with us. 🙂

The following day, we drove to Tagaytay and visited Leah’s friend’s farm to see the horses and the piggies. Liam just got up but he had fun seeing the plants and the animals there.  We then had lunch at The Dining Room, Gourmet Farms.  (see Leah’s post about it here).  We then visited Lola Sexy’s (Ate Caro, Leah’s officemate) house and check out her Christmas decors.

After his afternoon nap, we went to see my side of the family.  We went to Pandacan (my second brother, Jerry’s house) where my mom agreed to meet with us.  You see my mom lived in very Farview (Fairview) and she usually stays with my bro.  (hehe disclaimer agad).  He enjoyed our stay there since he have a new playmate – Kongkong (my SIL’s – Jerry’s wife – nephew).  They played from the time we stepped foot there til before we said our goodbyes.  Sayang lang, since am not very good at taking pics, wala nanaman kameng pictures.  Haist!!

Oh forgot to mention, Liam was so happy when he saw the tree being set up at Lola sexy’s home,  Dino then agreed to buy one here in Cebu.  This was already part of my plan, but was pushed back with all the happening here. But again, as my new matra goes, I refuse to live in fear, there are indeed a lot of reasons to love and life to the fullest.

All in all it was another well spent vacation in Manila. Til our next trip. 🙂

Aw Aw’s Bath Time

It’s been crazy here these past 2 months.  We’ve experience calamities left and right.  I really didn’t want to write any of it down in the blog, but thought that it’s still part of our  (Liam’s specifically) history – that we were able to experience these calamities and we were able to survive it.

Between the earthquake and the typhoon, am more stricken with the earthquake.  Since I was here in the office when in struck and the fact that we are still experiencing aftershocks until last week (a strong one at that), this is really nakakatakot.  With Typhoon Yolanda naman, all offices were closed that day, so we were able to stay home with Liam.  Though it is really depressing since Yolanda was really so powerful that thousands of people are now homeless.   We, ourselves were also busy tracking down our staffs in Tacloban.  Glad to announce also that we were able to track all 8 of them.  We are now working on relocating them.  This is a better problem, diba?!

Anyway,  back to my topic, as introduced before (see my post here), Liam has 2 dalmatian stuff toys, Aw Aw (ok, I conceive, his original name is doggy, but for some reason, mas kilala sya sa pagiging Aw Aw) and Raf Raf.  Among the 2, he always favor Aw Aw.  Lately, I thought magka-level na silang 2, since he likes bringing both dogs along and even agreed to bring Raf Raf sa plane instead of Aw Aw who slept in the luggage. Well, mas presentable kasi si Raf Raf (colorwise, hehe).

After that trip, both dogs are suuuper dirty that I already talked to him to let Ate Lilia wash them both.  I specifically asked Donna to have Aw Aw washed first, since he is super Putim na.  That night, I saw the almost black Aw Aw in our room and I asked Donna what happened.

Donna:  Ayaw po ni Liam palabhan e. Si Raf Raf na lang daw.

When I asked Liam how come he don’t want Aw Aw to be washed, he smelled Aw Aw and said “di pa bantot!” hahaha ang kulit lang ng anak ko.

So with the determination to have Aw Aw washed, I asked Liam to give him a bath that weekend which he willingly obliged.

Liam’s 3rd Birthday Party Prep

I would say this is the most indecisive moment for me.  I have changed my mind over what we will do for Liam’s birthday for thousand times.  That’s how indecisive I was.  Wanting it to be perfect for him.  I changed from school party – to a party in an orphanage – to Jollibee party – to a party with the neighbors – back to Jollibee party – then to a party at the garage – Finally!! to an intimate out of town party! YEY!!

We have decided of this 2 weeks before the actual birthday! Ang galing lang no?!!? hehehe.. Anyway, what’s important is that the celebrant will have a blast on his day!  So final plan includes a tradition (not  done), out of town trip, cake blowing, presents and a DIY Ice cream or Pizza party (definitely ice cream, since Liam loves this).

Tradition:  Liam already is in the stage where he knows what Christmas is.  So I wanted to start the Christmas Tree tradition, where we will put up our Tree on his birthday. I’ve looked for a peg and canvassed already, but with all the craziness the earthquake has brought, we were not able to buy and put up one.  no worries, there will always be next year.  Though, am still planning for us to put up some decors (this will be a project after we get back from our Manila trip)

I wanted a simple tree with simple ornaments lang. Important is that top decor is a star. :)

Out of Town Trip;  We initially agreed to book in Best Western Sandbar here in Mactan, but unfortunately they are fully booked.  Am so glad I’ve had a chat with one of my friends here in Cebu and she mentioned “Gaite Ranch” to me in Toledo. Luckily, they are open and have available rooms.  I checked with them after the calamity, they are doing good, so on we went.

Cake Blowing:  Usually, I would have a cake ready in the morning, but this year, am really super disorganized I was not able to buy even a small cake for the morning.  But, I was able to order a cake for Liam’s out of town party naman. So ok pa din. 🙂  By the way, this is what he wished for his birthday – A Birthday Cake!  Sana every year yan lang request nya.. hehehe

For the cake, I wanted a Bug themed cake just because our not so little boy is into bugs and insects nowadays. So I printed out these pics for his cake.

BUGS 3

Presents:  I just wanted Liam to open presents, kahit pa mumurahin lang na items inside. So I bought some toys and wrap them individually.  And I knew my SIL bought Liam books as presents already and for sure my MIL and FIL  have something for our boy too.

Ice Cream Party:  This one, I will let Leah of The Bright Spot, share with you guys what we did.  Yes, she will be my guest blogger here. Excited much!  She hosted an ice cream party for her friend’s family last August and I was so inggit.  We are both sure that Liam will super like this, so we decided to do it for him.  Well, what is a party without invitations diba?!?!  I tasked Liam to prepare the invitations for his guests.

Can’t wait for Leah’s post. Stay tuned guys! 🙂

Our Little Biker

This is already a late post. This was supposed to be posted 2 weeks ago.  Things got crazy here in the office with so much to finish and whole Cebu got crazier with the earthquake and all the intense aftershocks!!! Oh well, will not dwell on that anymore.  Here goes..

Couple of weeks ago, Dino and Liam started the day “detailing” Liam’s rides.  Liam showed interest with cleaning, way back after seeing his dad clean Pajeyow.  Good that Dino found a way how they can do this together (bonding time na din for the boys).

We’ve been planning to buy service bikes for the office for short trips and finally decided to visit our friend’s shop who sells secondhand folding bikes.  We found good items for our office had them reserved and bought Liam a new bike on impulse.  We fell in love with the bike and since we’ve been planning to buy him a bigger one, Ka-ching!! 😉

Just want to share, our African Daisies started blooming again.  We had this plant during our outreach program last 2011.  The school principal gave us a pot and now we have almost 10 pots of these beautiful flowers.  I snipped these 2 and placed them at our counter. (mental note: buy a better vase.)  Aren’t they wonderful?!!?

African Daisies.. :)

The following day, we let Liam swim after having breakfast and went to JCenter Mall for lunch.  We really planned for him to play in one of the playroom in the mall that have a zip line for kids.  But our little boy refuses to go in.  he cried when I tried going in by myself.  Not sure how this started, but he suddenly have phobia going in closed door facilities like Gymboree and the salon.   Hmm.. will try the “Wipe Out” trick next time.  Hope it’ll work.  Anyway, since he doesn’t want to play, we went to the arcade instead and spend time with their machines which is not a lot and a bit boring. 😦

While waiting for our lunch to be served Liam played with the fish bowls containing rolled up Bible passages.  After lunch we decided to go home and let Liam rest.

it’s been a while since I really cooked  and baked, I made it a point not to sleep-in that afternoon and make my time fruitful while Liam’s napping and Daddy is busy at the garage.  I baked Calamansi Cupcakes that afternoon and prepared dinner too.  I decided to try Mommy Sha’s  Sizzling Tofu.  I tweaked it a little since Dino don’t like mayo.   Will share my version in a separate post. 🙂 We paired it with Lechon Kawali and a glass of Aloe Vera juice.  yum yum.. 🙂

I really don’t know why I called this post / series (not sure if this will be constant thing) when it always contains our weekend (2 days) together. Oh well, it just sounds good, right!??!   Anyway, just an update, comes Monday, Dino and I decided to buy the bikes for ourselves na.  So, presenting our new rides.. 🙂

Oh yeah, before I forgot, like my previous One Fine Day post, there’s one thing that is not fine that weekend.  Liam is acting up again during meal time.  Haaay..  This is really making me frustrated.  I might dedicate a separate post for this alone.

Anyway, have a lot of pending posts pa, Boracay trip, Shangri-La trip, Liam’s birthday celeb and a lot more. Stay tuned guys. 🙂

Moal Boal Day 2

We started our day 2 early.  Well, as you may have already read before, Liam is an early riser (another trait he got from his dad, definitely not mine.. hehe).  Pati ang ninong at ninang nagising ng maaga. hehe Since our room does not come with free breakfast, the godparents bought bread, spreads and some snacks too.  I brought some instant noodles naman for all.  And for Liam, we ordered pancakes and omelet from the restaurant.

Breakfast is fun with the Bugoys and our Bugoyito.. :)

After our hearty breakfast, we decided to have an early swim.  Liam scrutinized and ransacked the cabana first before we hit the pool.  being the praning mommy that I am, I forced asked him to wear his floating vest which took me a while to convince him and to which, I also agreed him to remove after a while.  Not sure if it’s really like that or maybe because I bought the cheap kind, the hems are rubbing his skins causing his skin to redden.  Mas takot ako magka blisters anak ko, so I allowed him to remove na.

If you’re wondering where his ninang is, nag solo sa beach trying to find a “catch” hehe.  We joined Tin sa beach after 2 hrs in the pool (longest for Liam).  But I felt Liam is cold na, so we decided to troop back to barracks and relax a bit before our lunch.  We had our lunch there again (one thing I don’t like here is having very few choices for our meals).  Liam and Tin enjoyed the trampoline after lunch before we head back to the city.

Costumes! Costumes!

Ako na siguro ang pinaka-pasaway na nanay when it comes to costumes. hehe.. One of the things The only thing I hate about Liam’s school is their open air auditorium.. Yes, it’s not air-conditioned.  They always hold their activities there and I feel sorry for those Kids who wore “costumes”. You know all the works, wool, synthetic, polyester materials. I bet Liam will complain if he wears those.

Anyway, just want to share some of Liam’s activities where they have to wear costumes..

LINGGO NG WIKA

This was an easy one.  They were required to wear Kamisa de Chino (easy, this is Liam’s staple sleepwear) and checkered pajama pants and a matching scarf to be tied on the neck.  Since this was his first school program, medyo nag-effort pa ko. I bought a good clothe na checkered and had it sewn.

During practice Liam danced with his teacher and he was the only student following. On the program proper, nanibago ata with the loud sound system.. kaya eto sya..

Para di doble gastos, I decided to let Liam wear his old Tiong Sam, so I have to look for a chinese top na lang though I know that for sure there will be lots of kids wearing same costume…

The pants is a bit bitin already. Thanks to my cousin who gave Liam this set when he turned 1 :)

BOOK MONTH

For some reason, Liam is not in the mood this day and end up wearing civilian clothes.  They were requested to wear their favorite characters.  Thinking that Liam would be the only one without costume, I asked my office mate to buy a Spiderman costume for Liam. Buti na lang din, he did not wear it, cause it really was a hot day and for sure double irritation for him, if he will wear it. 🙂

LET IT SNOW CHRISTMAS

This is when I started to be a pasaway. For their Christmas presentation, boys were required to wear a snowman costumes and girls were to wear snow fairy costumes. Pasted in their journals are these pegs…

PIT SENYOR!

January is the much awaited Sinulog Festival here in Cebu.  They had a little program din in school to celebrate it.  Eto sorry, pero we got the advice a day before lang. They were required to wear any Sinulog or Black shirt to school instead of their PE uniforms.  No time for me to buy him a Sinulog shirt and Liam don’t have a black shirt. Sorry this is one Chinese trait that was retained with me. I don’t let my little one wear black.  Pero buti na lang, one of my office mate gave Liam a black shirt as pasalubong from Singapore. Yes, you read it right, Singapore.. malapit naman sa Sinulog diba?! ahehehehehe

MAGTANIM AY ‘DI BIRO

During Liam’s summer class, one of their activity was planting. They were requested to wear white long sleeves kamisa de chino, folded pants ala magsasaka, hat, scarf the work. Oh no! not for my son. Ang init kaya nung May! I told Donna to let him wear a sando and the folded pants he has and put some sunblock on Liam.
